Some people are seeking help to be healed or to 'fix' what has been damaged. They are looking for answers or advice from their therapist. Although, therapy doesn't work that way. Bent Falk in his book 'Honest Dialogue' says: 'The essential resources for overcoming a difficulty are in a person having the difficulty or in the field of interaction between the people in dialogue. The helper is the interpreter or facilitator of the helpee's search for clarification and choices'. Do you agree with this idea? Are you aware that you are the expert of your life, not your therapist? The therapist can't 'fix' something for you. Although, they can help you explore your experiences and make some sense of your struggles. They can assist you in uncovering those internal strengths that you already have that might help you to move forward in life. They can support you in your therapy journey of positive changes. Finally, they can provide you safe space to talk while feeling heard, understood, and accepted. These are the 'core conditions' for a therapeutic growth that leads to positive changes within you.
